The Royal Enfield had only a little petrol left in the tank - and you never know when some one is going to hire one of the motorbikes - so I told the wife I was off to get the tank filled up. I was looking forward to it - I hadn't ridden the motorbike since I took her up for a period of motorcycle rental in Toulouse. We had not had much success in hiring her in Pau, or Biarritz so that was a necessary tour. She was much more appreciated in Toulouse - with one person even coming from Carcassone to rent the motorcycle. Of course - doing motorcycle rentals mean you have to market the business too, So, I took the camera and headed off towards Spain. The first filling station is 40KM from our base in Montrejeau. Having tanked up and having pitched a couple of potential french customers on BMW's on our motorcycle hire business - I headed back home. On the way back I decided to climb the mountain - signposted Melles. It was warm, about 16 degrees C - and bright sunshine - although visitors to the Pyrenees should be warned the temperature drops dramatically in the shadows. The Royal Enfield as always proves it is the perfect bike for gentle touring - in its element at around the 100Km/hour mark - the engine note turns into a purr. Passers-by and car drivers wave and smile - and you can't help but feel absolutely at one with the bike and the road. It is also in its element one-up in the tight mountain bends. The climb up to Melles is tight - and absorbing - on any bike - perhaps less so on the Enfield as there is no pressure to make the bike perform - you just sit back and enjoy the ride, enjoy the photos of on of our motorcycles for hire in its element.
